Ocean Flyer | CEO Shah Aslam's Keynote Speech at REGENT's Full-Scale Seaglider Unveiling Event

Ocean Flyer | CEO Shah Aslam's Keynote Speech at REGENT's Full-Scale Seaglider Unveiling Event

Our CEO Shah Aslam had the honour of delivering a keynote speech at REGENT’s unveiling event of the full-scale seaglider, held at their headquarters in Rhode Island, USA. Over the past few weeks, we have seen the devastating impacts of the weather in New Zealand. Communities have been disconnected due to flooding, landslides, collapsed bridges, and road closures. Climate change is here. We need bold solutions to reduce our carbon emissions and reach our goals of becoming carbon-neutral, while re-connecting our communities. At Ocean Flyer, we believe seagliders can play a pivotal role in the sustainable future of transportation. Seagliders will offer a fast, comfortable and affordable transport option, which is fully sustainable. The fully-electric nature of seagliders allows for greater efficiencies, and we’re excited for what this means for the future of regional travel in New Zealand. As Shah Aslam put it in his speech, “greater connectivity, generates greater productivity, which generates prosperity”. The unveiling of the full-scale seaglider is a testament to the years of research and development by Billy Thalheimer, Mike Klinker and the team at REGENT, which brings us one step closer to seeing Ocean Flyer seagliders operating around the coast of Aotearoa. Congratulations to REGENT on this huge achievement, and we’re excited to be bringing seagliders to the coastlines of New Zealand in just a couple of years! Ocean Flyer | World Maritime Day 2022

Ocean Flyer | World Maritime Day 2022

Happy World Maritime Day 🌊❤️ The theme for World Maritime Day 2022 is 'New technologies for greener shipping' - reflecting the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector into a sustainable future. At Ocean Flyer, we believe seagliders are the future of sustainable maritime transportation. Earlier this year our CEO Shah Aslam announced a $700 million agreement with REGENT to purchase 25 seagliders which are set to be operating around the coast of New Zealand from 2025. Just last week, REGENT announced completing its maiden flight with the prototype, a huge milestone in bringing Aotearoa yet another step closer to enjoying zero-emission journeys on our blue highway, that connect our regions to our cities thanks to a new mode of transport. “Ocean Flyer will soon offer this fully electric mode of mass public transport and coastal shipping. The climate crisis has arrived. The need to accelerate emissions reduction gets more pressing every day. Ocean Flyer is proud to be taking the lead as the first seaglider-only transport business in the world. As always with initiatives like this, a Kiwi company is taking the lead in delivering sustainable, affordable, fast, and accessible transport." - Shah Aslam, CEO of Ocean Flyer. Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 4 - The Regulator

In Episode 4 we're learning more about the regulation of seagliders. As a wing-in-ground effect vehicle, seagliders will fall under maritime rules, rather than aviation rules. Globally the International Maritime Organization is responsible for setting standards regarding the safety and regulation aspects of maritime vessels. In the United States this passes to the US Coast Guard, and here in Aotearoa, Maritime New Zealand will be the regulator for Ocean Flyer’s seagliders. REGENT recently received classification Approval in Principle for a wing-in-ground vessel from leading global classification society Bureau Veritas Group, which is a significant milestone on the journey towards bringing seagliders to Aotearoa's blue highway. Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 6 - Landing

Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 6 - Landing

In Episode 6 we're discovering how Ocean Flyer seagliders will always have a safe place to land as they are never more than 10 to 20 metres above the surface of the water. This gives Ocean Flyer seagliders the significant benefit of needing to carry and use less energy compared to an aircraft, as seagliders gain efficiencies from flying in-ground effect, and can land safely on the water below at any time. Ocean Flyer seagliders also conserve energy by not needing to climb to the same altitudes as a conventional aircraft. Climbing 10,000 to 20,000 feet is a huge source of energy consumption for an aircraft - so much so, that this is a key component in electric aviation being a decade or more away from being commercially viable due to the limitations of current battery technology. Seaglider Savvy is our new multi-part video series where you get to find out everything you need to know about seagliders, Ocean Flyer and REGENT as our CEO Shah Aslam sits down with CTO and co-founder of REGENT Mike Klinker. Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 7 - Battery Tech: Seagliders vs Aviation

Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 7 - Battery Tech: Seagliders vs Aviation

In Episode 7 we're discovering the reason why Ocean Flyer's electric seagliders will be coming to market far sooner than electric aviation will be commercially viable. At Air Napier, we have experienced first-hand the importance of reserve fuel requirements in flight planning, and how this frequently plays out when airports are busy and our aircraft need to circle using that reserve fuel. Ocean Flyer seagliders will always be operating over the surface of the water, so there will always be a safe place to land directly below the vehicle. This means the reserve fuel requirements needed for aviation are not required for seagliders. With limitations in battery technology, this will allow seagliders to be commercially viable several years before electric aircraft will be feasible. Furthermore, Ocean Flyer seagliders are classed as a Maritime vessel, and will be certified globally through the International Maritime Organization, and domestically through Maritime New Zealand. The pathway to certification through these maritime authorities will be significantly quicker than for that of an aircraft, yet seagliders will still benefit from all the same safety standards found in aviation. Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 8 - Safety Features

In Episode 8 we're finding out what safety features will be on board Ocean Flyer's electric seagliders, and how technology will be used to assist the pilots. Technology will play a key role in assisting the pilots who will be operating the seagliders, featuring a complete fly-by-wire control system, a full GPS navigation system, an automatic traffic detection and avoidance system, and a vehicle management system which monitors the health of the whole seaglider including the batteries, motors and hydrofoils. The combination of these technologies will ensure a safe, reliable, comfortable and efficient service for our travellers.
