Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 4 - The Regulator

In Episode 4 we're learning more about the regulation of seagliders. As a wing-in-ground effect vehicle, seagliders will fall under maritime rules, rather than aviation rules. Globally the International Maritime Organization is responsible for setting standards regarding the safety and regulation aspects of maritime vessels. In the United States this passes to the US Coast Guard, and here in Aotearoa, Maritime New Zealand will be the regulator for Ocean Flyerโ€™s seagliders. REGENT recently received classification Approval in Principle for a wing-in-ground vessel from leading global classification society Bureau Veritas Group, which is a significant milestone on the journey towards bringing seagliders to Aotearoa's blue highway. Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 6 - Landing

Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 6 - Landing

In Episode 6 we're discovering how Ocean Flyer seagliders will always have a safe place to land as they are never more than 10 to 20 metres above the surface of the water. This gives Ocean Flyer seagliders the significant benefit of needing to carry and use less energy compared to an aircraft, as seagliders gain efficiencies from flying in-ground effect, and can land safely on the water below at any time. Ocean Flyer seagliders also conserve energy by not needing to climb to the same altitudes as a conventional aircraft. Climbing 10,000 to 20,000 feet is a huge source of energy consumption for an aircraft - so much so, that this is a key component in electric aviation being a decade or more away from being commercially viable due to the limitations of current battery technology. Seaglider Savvy is our new multi-part video series where you get to find out everything you need to know about seagliders, Ocean Flyer and REGENT as our CEO Shah Aslam sits down with CTO and co-founder of REGENT Mike Klinker. Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 7 - Battery Tech: Seagliders vs Aviation

Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 7 - Battery Tech: Seagliders vs Aviation

In Episode 7 we're discovering the reason why Ocean Flyer's electric seagliders will be coming to market far sooner than electric aviation will be commercially viable. At Air Napier, we have experienced first-hand the importance of reserve fuel requirements in flight planning, and how this frequently plays out when airports are busy and our aircraft need to circle using that reserve fuel. Ocean Flyer seagliders will always be operating over the surface of the water, so there will always be a safe place to land directly below the vehicle. This means the reserve fuel requirements needed for aviation are not required for seagliders. With limitations in battery technology, this will allow seagliders to be commercially viable several years before electric aircraft will be feasible. Furthermore, Ocean Flyer seagliders are classed as a Maritime vessel, and will be certified globally through the International Maritime Organization, and domestically through Maritime New Zealand. The pathway to certification through these maritime authorities will be significantly quicker than for that of an aircraft, yet seagliders will still benefit from all the same safety standards found in aviation. Seaglider Savvy is our new multi-part video series where you get to find out everything you need to know about seagliders, Ocean Flyer and REGENT as our CEO Shah Aslam sits down with CTO and co-founder of REGENT Mike Klinker. Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 8 - Safety Features

In Episode 8 we're finding out what safety features will be on board Ocean Flyer's electric seagliders, and how technology will be used to assist the pilots. Technology will play a key role in assisting the pilots who will be operating the seagliders, featuring a complete fly-by-wire control system, a full GPS navigation system, an automatic traffic detection and avoidance system, and a vehicle management system which monitors the health of the whole seaglider including the batteries, motors and hydrofoils. The combination of these technologies will ensure a safe, reliable, comfortable and efficient service for our travellers. Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 9 - Why Seagliders?

Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 9 - Why Seagliders?

In Episode 9 we're learning why REGENT is developing the seaglider, and how this new mode of transport is set to be a game changer for regional transportation. REGENTโ€™s seagliders will combine multiple existing technologies from today, to create a sustainable transport option for the future. Hydrofoil technology, perhaps most famously known for its use in the America's Cup, will play a key role in ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride for the passengers. Battery technology has improved significantly over the past few years, allowing electric propulsion to be a viable energy source for powering the seagliders, creating zero-emissions and being fully sustainable. Fly-by-wire control systems have also seen significant improvements in recent years, meaning this technology can be utilised in seagliders to enable the pilots to operate them safely and reliably. The culmination of the development of these technologies means the time is ripe for seagliders to be developed, enter the market, and revolutionise the way transport is done. Seaglider Savvy is our new multi-part video series where you get to find out everything you need to know about seagliders, Ocean Flyer and REGENT as our CEO Shah Aslam sits down with CTO and co-founder of REGENT Mike Klinker. Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 10 - Why REGENT's Seaglider?

In Episode 10 we're discovering why Ocean Flyer signed a $700 million agreement with REGENT to bring 25 all-electric seagliders to New Zealand. Ocean Flyer will offer Kiwis a fast, comfortable and affordable transport option, which is fully sustainable. 75% of New Zealand's population is situated around the coast, making seagliders a perfect fit for us here in Aotearoa. Making full use of our blue highway, Ocean Flyer's fully-electric seagliders will allow for greater regional connectivity and productivity for all Kiwis across the motu, whilst also being emission free and contributing significantly towards New Zealand becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 11 - First Reaction

In Episode 11 we're discovering what Ocean Flyer's CEO Shah Aslam is looking forward to most about riding in a seaglider for the first time. Travelling at 30,000 feet in a conventional aircraft means your field of view is so wide, that when you look out of the window, it's hard to get a feel for how fast you're going. In an Ocean Flyer seaglider, you'll be flying at an altitude of just 10 metres above the surface of the water, meaning speed perception will be much better, leading to a fun and exhilarating journey. REGENT are creating the seagliders with this in mind, and are purposely designing the windows to be large to allow for passengers to better take in the great coastal views. Ocean Flyer | Seaglider Savvy - Episode 12 - Wishlist

In this final episode of Series 1, we're discovering how Ocean Flyer's seagliders will have large windows to allow passengers to take in the great coastal views. Watch as our CEO, Shah Aslam, asks Mike Klinker, CTO of REGENT, if we can get glass floors in the seagliders to watch the marine life pass by ๐Ÿ˜‚ While the jury is still out on that one, REGENT are purposely designing the windows with customer experience in mind, and have plans for a moonroof onboard to allow passengers to fully immerse themselves in the outside world whilst travelling in the seaglider.
